Our Story
Every great recipe has a story
and mine began long before this bakery

Growing up, some of my favorite memories were made in the kitchen with my mom. She was always baking and decorating cakes for birthdays, celebrations, and many other special occasions—even beautiful wedding cakes. I loved watching her work and helping whenever I could, paying close attention to all the little details that made each recipe special.
When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, I found myself stepping into a role that had always been hers. I began baking and decorating the cakes for our family celebrations, carrying on something she had lovingly done for us for so many years. Without realizing it at the time, she had taught me much more than how to bake a cake. She taught me that something made by hand, with time, patience, and love, could become a meaningful part of someone's special day.
Those lessons stayed with me.
The cakes that started it all

And then there was my best friend, Mary Grace.
Mary Grace and I met through the Medina PTA and quickly became the best of friends. Our friendship grew to include our husbands and children, creating a special bond between our families that continue to this day. We are still close family friends, and that connection will always hold a special place in my heart.
Mary wasn't just my dear friend; she was also an incredible baker. Everyone looked forward to her homemade treats, especially her chocolate chip cookies. Although she generously shared several of her favorite recipes with me over the years, I could never quite master those wonderful cookies the way Mary did.

Now that I've retired after many years as a school principal, I finally have a little more time—and I still find myself missing Mary.
One day, Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying came on the radio. It has always been a song that reminds me of Mary, who left this world far too young at just 40 years old. But as I listened, it felt different. I was already baking, but I had been wondering if I should take a chance and turn something I loved into something more. As the song played, I couldn't help but feel as though Mary was giving me a little push, gently saying, "Danene, it's time. Go for it."
And this time, I did.
The cookie that started a new chapter
Interestingly, the cookie that started this new chapter wasn't Mary's recipe at all. My sister-in-law, who is a breast cancer survivor, had shared a recipe with me for salted chocolate chip cookies. I decided to give it a try—and then began making it my own. I played with the recipe, adjusted it, and started experimenting with ways to bring some of our other favorite cookie flavors to life.
What started with a salted chocolate chip cookie soon grew into sugar cookies, oatmeal raisin, Oreo chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate chip, and many others. Before I knew it, I wasn't simply following a recipe anymore. I was creating, experimenting, and discovering how much I truly enjoyed being back in the kitchen.
That little spark eventually inspired me to reach out to the Mary Grace Memorial Foundation and ask if I could donate my cookies for this year's race. They welcomed the idea, and I began baking sample cookies to share.
With a little more time on my hands now—and with the help of my oldest daughter, Emily, and family—she has inspired me to start a small scratch bakery inspired by family, friendship, generations of baking, and the simple joy that comes from making something special for someone else.
It is with a grateful heart that I introduce The Beal Way Bakery… Gracefully Done. Every cookie is baked from scratch with love, attention to detail, a touch of grace, and a story behind it.
In many ways, it feels like life has come full circle—from watching my mom bake and decorate cakes, to taking over our family cakes when she became ill, to being inspired by Mary's love of baking, and to receiving a new recipe from my sister-in-law.
Sometimes the sweetest things in life begin with a simple recipe, a treasured memory, and the people we love.
